Malvika Vaswani is an award-winning experimental brand based in the heart of Mumbai, India. Working with unconventional materials, the brand aspires to re-contextualise traditional craft techniques to make unique hand-made products.
Founder & designer Malvika Vaswani, wanted to come home to India after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design to continue her thesis work on exploring the skilled handcrafting traditions slowly disappearing all over the subcontinent. On her journeys from one artisan’s karkhana (studio) to the next, she discovered that the evolution of form had plateaued leading to a stagnation of creative innovation. This inspired her to begin to experiment with using technology as a complement to the orthodox techniques in the hope that it would be a catalyst for the artisans she collaborates with towards new inspirations.
Through balancing a longstanding indian tradition of haute jewelery with an inquisitive and experimental instinct Malvika Vaswani seeks to re-imagine contemporary jewellery design. Inspired deeply by architecture and design movements such as the Bauhaus and Art deco, every piece is hand-made locally using ethical manufacturing practices along with unconventional materials and techniques. Thus blending the contemporary with the conventional to create products that bear the ‘Made in India’ mark with pride.
